About me

Hello my name is Francis Gon-Gibbs in terms of education, I am currently in the process of acquiring a bachelor of science in human development with an emphasis in exercise bio,and nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Studying the physiological, physical and brain development of human beings exposed me to the subject of fitness and health. Being a human development major, I learned in which specific ways fitness and weightlifting effect health and development macroscopically and microscopically particularly in older adults.  I have studied countless “insider” articles discussing the importance of exercise and weightlifting. I began really taking an interest in this subject when I was fairly young. I played sports my whole life, the three main ones being swimming, soccer and rugby. All these sports required high levels of fitness in order to be performed correctly. These sports also require specific types of training and nutrition and thus made me more knowledgeable about the effects of exercise and weightlifting on the body. In fact, it is back in middleschool and highschool that I really realized how exercise can really change the body.

I noticed how my body would change the more I did a certain sport and trained for it.My coach would tell me to eat more of certain foods depending on the sport. My body looked noticeable different between years I played more rugby than I did swimming and vice versa. A swimmer’s body tends to have broader shoulders and a toned physique. A rugby players body, tends to have more of that bigger bulkier type muscles, which resulted in me looking a lot heavier and thicker legged. These physical changes are what first intrigued me about the effects of exercise. On top of this, I was not even aware of the non-physically noticeable physiological changes just yet. As I got more curious, I did not take me long to realize that my friends who did not really do sports would fatigue and be out of breath significantly faster than me or other friends who did a lot of sports. Asking myself “why? Did my lungs just work better? What changed inside of me?” This was pretty much my introduction to the vast physiological changes that occur in the body in response to exercise.

Of course there is a darker end of the stick to this subject: Cardiovascular diseases. These diseases often strike people who are too inactive in their life. Having worked as a professional Ocean Lifeguard EMT for the Los Angeles County Fire Department since 2014, I have seen first-hand, in the form of medical emergencies, the sometimes disastrous health effects of being cardiovascular diseases.  With my background and experience, in the future, I intend on going to graduate school to obtain a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy

Welcome to the blog

The purpose of this blog is to present to you the ins and outs of the discourse community of fitness/weightlifting and how it relates to health. I will explain the goal the most of the members of this community have and some more personal goals that smaller groups of this community share. I also intend on bringing more attention about a particular issue within this discourse community: Pharmacological vs. Exercise treatment/prevention in CVD and respiratory health. I will also discuss the potential career options related to the field of fitness and health. One career path will take place more in the gym/fitness facility setting and requires less education while the other ventures into the clinical/medical side and require substantially more education. Of course this blog is not solely for members of the fitness community, I provide information that those who are not members but that are interested can understand, participate, learn requirements and how to be a successful member of the discourse community. With this blog I also hope to mainly have my readers be enlightened on the seemingly magical effects a little exercise has on the body. I would want the information I present to make my audience seriously rethink not exercising at all and hopefully even push some people to start exercising. To further encourage the flow of helpful, educational information readers can just visit the forum section of the blog and post questions, opinions, or new interesting information to discuss about.
